Following dual podiums at Circuit of The Americas, the opening round of the Pirelli World Challenge, Global Motorsports Group (GMG) will head to this weekend’s Grand Prix of St. Petersburg in search of continued results at the famed street circuit. Focusing their efforts on drivers Alec Udell and James Sofronas, the team will look to capitalize on their recent momentum.

“We’ve had a lot of good memories at St. Petersburg, and I’m sure we can continue that trend this weekend,” stated GMG team owner James Sofronas. “From earning the first win for the R8, to bringing Andrew Palmer his first podium, we’ve managed to create results here every year and with a talent like Alec on our team I’m sure we can continue that momentum.”

Competing on the 1.8-mile, 14-turn temporary street circuit, the crew at GMG is no stranger to success at the event. In 2013, James Sofronas drove a patient and calculated pace to make a late-race pass and take the first-ever victory for the Audi R8 LMS in Pirelli World Challenge competition. One year later, with newcomer Andrew Palmer making his series debut, the 19-year old would take victory in the GTA category and a third place overall, elevating him to the professional ranks. A tribute to the team’s development and coaching system, Andrew has since gone on to take victories at both the Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring.

The latest addition to GMG’s development roster, 19-year old Alec Udell, hopes to find similar success at the street circuit. Driving the No. 17 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup 991, the Texas native will take to the GT Cup category following dual podiums in Austin. Having driven the circuit on multiple occasions in the GTS category, Alec hopes his experience at the track will play to his advantage for the new category.

“Like any street circuit, St. Petersburg really doesn’t afford many mistakes, so you have to be careful,” stated Udell. “We’ve had some strong runs here in the past, including successive top-10’s in 2013 and hopefully that will translate this year. With the new Porsche Cup class, several of our competitors will be new here so it will be nice to not lose much time learning the circuit.”

For James Sofronas, the No. 14 Spyder / The Thermal Club / Audi R8 LMS ultra has historically proven strong at the circuit, but the Villa Park, California resident is not underestimating this weekend’s challenge.

“We know we have a car that is strong here, but with the series as competitive as it is, it’s going to be a real fight,” stated Sofronas. “The guys have been pushing hard to find every ounce of speed and hopefully we can continue where we left off the last two years.”

Practice for the Cadillac Grand Prix of St. Petersburg begins tomorrow at 5:30 PM ET, with Race One occurring on Saturday, March 28 at 11:10 AM. Race Two will occur 24 hours later at 10:45 AM.
