Udell, Alex Welch, Sofronas Return to Action in Wisconsin

Returning to the team’s core reputation of servicing multiple cars at the same event, Global Motorsports Group (GMG) will head to this weekend’s Pirelli World Challenge Devilbiss Road America Grand Prix presented by Cadillac with a venerable three-car lineup. Headed to the famed Road America circuit in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, the team will split their efforts between three categories with Alec Udell in the GT Cup category, Alex Welch in GTA, and James Sofronas in the headlining GT ranks.

“I’m really looking forward to getting back behind the wheel, and what better place than Road America,” stated team owner and driver James Sofronas. “It’s hard to believe it’s been several weeks since my last race because we’ve all been non-stop at the shop. Our business is known for not only its race support but an extensive range of street tuning services and upgrades as well, and with some recent projects we’ve undertaken, the time has flown by. I’m looking forward to finally getting back out! Road America is a special place for us, as it’s where my brother and I ran in our first professional car race together in 1994.”

Driving the No. 14 Mobil 1 / Spyder / The Thermal Club Audi R8 LMS ultra, Sofronas is no stranger to the nuances of the fast, four mile circuit. Not only did he make his professional racing debut at the circuit in 1994, but he also took pole position in 2009. Having not been on track since April at Barber Motorsports Park, the Californian is looking forward to a return to form.

Extending the Audi contingent for GMG will be team and series veteran Alex Welch. Continuing a season that has seen the Colorado resident travel the world in a variety of series, including racing at the legendary Circuit de la Sarthe two weeks ago in France, Alex will return to the GTA category in the No. 76 Audi R8 LMS ultra.

“I’m looking forward to returning to the series and any chance to race at Road America is a good one,” stated Welch. “I’ve been very fortunate this year to be able to try my hand at several different categories and series but, in many ways, I still look at GMG and the Pirelli World Challenge as my home so it will be great to be back. We’re hoping for good results here as the car should be well-suited for the circuit’s fast corners, but time will tell.”

Also returning to action will be the team’s third and final entry, 19-year-old Alec Udell in the No. 17 Panther Pipeline Porsche 911 GT Cup. Following a strong open to the season in which the Texas native scored successive podium finishes, an unavoidable incident during the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg would result in extensive damage that has forced Alec to sit out the majority of the season. Despite the maligned year, Udell has continually proven his ability taking podium finishes in all four races that he’s taken the green flag in.

“Road America is a race we didn’t want to miss, so I’m very thankful that we’re back,” stated Udell. “I really have to thank James and everyone at GMG for creating a program that could get us back behind the wheel. It’s frustrating because we’ve repeatedly shown our speed and ability, but hopefully the worst is behind us and we can show well for everyone at Panther Pipeline.”

Official practice for the event begins Thursday, June 25, with Race One taking place on Saturday at 2:35 PM ET. Race Two will take place one day later at 3:25 PM ET.
