Rob Phillips to Make Lamborghini Debut with GMG, Jeffrey Cheng Returns

Less than four weeks from their initial return to the prestigious Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo North America, Global Motorsports Group (GMG) will once again return to action today during the series’ penultimate weekend at Circuit of the Americas in Texas. In addition to the return of Jeffrey Cheng to the team, GMG will also welcome Rob Phillips to the program, marking the team’s first multi-car effort in the series in over a year.

“It’s been a busy few weeks for everyone on the team, but we’re thankful for the opportunity to return,” stated GMG team owner James Sofronas. “We’ve had such a great history in the series, and they do a great job of creating a championship that welcomes all comers. It fits our development program well, and bringing in drivers like Jeffrey and Rob is a testament to that. Having Jeffrey back is fantastic. I think he really surprised everyone with his performance at VIR, making passes on several cars and finishing on the podium in both races. Rob Phillips is new to the series but not new to our team, and he’s an excellent racer and a good friend. Even though this is a new experience for him, I think he’ll turn a lot of heads with his speed. We’ve really enjoyed our partnership with Lamborghini Newport Beach, and a big thanks to Vorsteiner who’ve gone a long way in helping us develop these machines. We’re all looking forward to a great two days, the first race is only hours away!”

Returning to the team in the No. 88 Lamborghini Huracán LP 620-2, Jeffrey Cheng looks to repeat the success he experienced during his series debut at VIRginia International Raceway. Coming in to his debut event, the Californian had limited experience at this level of competition, yet stepped up to the category brilliantly, scoring podium results in all three of his races with co-driver Matt Halliday. Making several passes and keeping his car clean, Cheng looks to repeat that feat during the upcoming double-header.

Unfortunately with limited practice time due to a full event schedule, and at very technical circuit, Jeffrey is modest in his expectations.

“It’s going to be tough to top our last race, this is definitely a challenging circuit,” stated Cheng. “VIR was an amazing weekend for me, and I have to thank everyone at GMG for the opportunity to make it all happen. We learned a lot, and I felt the improvement in my driving, so I’m trying to stay positive this weekend. Circuit of the Americas is such a great track with a lot of history in only a short amount of time, it’s a place you always want to do well at. We unfortunately won’t get nearly as much practice time which definitely creates a challenge, so we just need to keep our heads down and see how the next two days go.”

New to the series but no stranger to the sport is Rob Phillips in the No. 32 Lamborghini Huracán LP 620-2. Phillips, a long-time friend of GMG and a veteran of various categories, will step in to this week’s double-header looking to impress in his debut.

“This has been a series I’ve noticed for a while now, so it’s great to finally get an opportunity to run,” stated Phillips. “GMG always does a great job preparing their cars and drivers, and I know I’m as set up as I can be for today and tomorrow. I really appreciate the effort that James and all of the guys have put in to this, hopefully we can deliver.”

With practice and qualifying already past, the team will take to the grid for the first of two races today at 6:55PM ET, with Race Two taking place at 9AM ET the next day. The team will provide continuous updates via their Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram feeds.
