GMG to Close Out 2015 Season with Lamborghini Super Trofeo Finale
Following a six-week break from competition in the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo North America, Global Motorsports Group will return to action during this week’s Series and World Finale at the famed Sebring International Raceway. With this week’s North American championship finale happening over the next two days, followed by the World Final this weekend, GMG’s two-car lineup will have a busy few days ahead.
“I can’t think of a better place to hold our finale than in Sebring,” stated GMG team owner James Sofronas. “It’s such a historic venue, and should be a ton of fun in our cars. Both Rob and Jeffrey are well prepared, and the guys have done their usual great job getting us ready for this week’s finale. We definitely want to close the season strong as we have big ambitions to expand our program for next year.”
During the World Final two years ago, GMG’s Andrew Palmer took an impressive victory at the scenic Mugello circuit in Italy, with the 19-year old seeing the checkered flag during the team’s first-ever run at the World Final event. While ambitions for this year’s events are a little more modest, the whole organization is confident for a strong run for the two entries of Rob Phillips and Jeffrey Cheng, who will be co-driving with Sofronas.
Driving the No. 32 Lamborghini Huracán LP 620-2, Southern California’s Rob Phillips will head to this week’s festivities encouraged for a strong showing. Having run his last race at Circuit of the Americas in September, the Californian knows that patience will be key to his success during this year’s round.
“It’s a very exciting week ahead,” stated Phillips. “The last couple of events for us haven’t gone as strong as I would have liked, but this weekend we know that we just need to be patient and focused. The speed has always been there, and the quality of GMG’s preparation is unquestionable, so we’re excited to see how this all unfolds.”
Driving the No. 88 Vorsteiner / Lamborghini Newport Beach machine, Jeffrey Cheng will also take to the wheel alongside James Sofronas for his final taste of pro racing for the year. Cheng, who just a few months ago had virtually no race experience, has enjoyed a tremendous rookie season so far. In only three race weekends, the Newport Beach resident has garnered three trips to the podium, and has demonstrated tremendous improvement despite limited experience at this level. Heading in to the finale, confidence is high.
“I know that Sebring can be a really challenging venue, and I’m coming in completely respectful of that,” stated Cheng. “James and the guys have done an excellent job getting me ready for it, and I’m trying to absorb everything as best I can before the heated racing really begins. Whatever the result, I’ve enjoyed a great season so far, and really have to thank everyone at GMG for this tremendous opportunity, it’s been great fun.”
With dual events taking place, the conclusion of the North American championship will happen today and tomorrow, November 19 and 20, with the World Finals taking place this weekend on the 21st and 22nd. GMG will send continual updates throughout the event.
