GMG to Bring Three Cars to Watkins Glen Round of Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America
Following a dominant performance at the most recent round in Monterey, Global Motorsports Group (GMG) will head to this weekend’s fifth and sixth rounds of the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo North America with three cars ready to take on the high-speed Watkins Glen International.
“Watkins Glen is such a classic, high-speed course, it should be really fun in the Lamborghini,” stated GMG team owner James Sofronas. “All three of our drivers will definitely be learning to hang it out at this track, as it’s so big and with so many fast corners. We’re lucky to have three great guys running this weekend, and I’m looking forward to watching it unfold.”
Returning to the team will be series veteran Tom O’Gara in the No. 33 Lamborghini Beverly Hills / O’Gara Motorsports Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4. The 2013 sportsman category champion is coming to Watkins Glen after running some of his most impressive lap times at the recent round at Laguna Seca.
“Watkins Glen should be a fantastic circuit for the Lamborghini,” stated O’Gara. “With the high-speed corners and long straights, we’re on the edge the whole time, and it’s just such a beautiful track to drive. It’s been awhile since our last race, so I’m looking forward to getting back out there. Everyone at GMG has done a great job getting the car prepared and it should be a good race.”
Making his series debut will be Stuart Davidson driving the No. 88 Lamborghini Vancouver machine. Hailing from Vancouver, Davidson has never raced in the series, but looks forward to the challenge.
“The Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo North America has shown a lot of promise in just one year of racing,” stated Davidson. “I have to thank Lamborghini Vancouver for the opportunity as it’s a rare opportunity to drive such a fantastic car at such a storied track. The car is a proven winner from Sebring, hopefully I can continue that heritage.”
Finally, driving the No. 14 machine will be another series newcomer, but an experienced racer, David Welch. A veteran in a number of racing disciplines, David has competed in series such as The Pirelli World Challenge (where he drove with GMG in 2012), Indy Lights, and number of open wheel and touring car categories. Boasting a number of touring car victories as well as a title at the prestigious 25 Hours of Thunderhill, the Washington native looks forward to trying his hand at some new machinery.
“Driving a Lamborghini at Watkins Glen should be a pretty special experience,” stated Welch. “These cars have quite a lot of down force and a lot of features that should make the cars take really well to the course. GMG has such a good reputation that I look forward to the opportunity to race with them, and similarly I greatly appreciate the opportunity from Lamborghini Beverly Hills.”
Practice for the event begins Thursday, June 26, with Race One taking place on Friday at 4PM EDT. The series’ second round will take place one day later with a 5:30PM start time.
