GMG Returns to Lamborghini Super Trofeo Competition at Road Atlanta
Continuing the team’s commitment to driver development and support across a number of different racing series, Global Motorsports Group (GMG) will once again return to the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo North America during this weekend’s ninth and tenth rounds at Road Atlanta. Running as a support event to the famed Petit Le Mans, GMG’s Jeffrey Cheng and James Sofronas will take to the wheel of the No. 88 Lamborghini Huracán LP 620-2.
“It’s great to return to Road Atlanta,” stated Sofronas. “It’s such a great track and amazing event, we’re proud to be a part of it. As a series dedicated to exposing drivers to some of the country’s premier events, this hits the mark perfectly. There’s always a great crowd and a great atmosphere, so I’m glad we have the opportunity to present such an event to a guy like Jeffrey. He’s well prepared for this event, and there’s no doubt it will be a challenge. With fast corners, elevation changes, and a pretty good level of competition, it will be a tough couple of races, but we’re staying positive and looking for a good experience.”
Following three successive podiums in his series debut at VIRginia International Raceway, Jeffrey Cheng’s most recent event at Circuit of the Americas provided additional experience for the newcomer. Improving several seconds from the beginning of his week to the end, the succession shown within GMG’s development system has proved rapid, with this weekend’s event providing additional experience before the series’ finale at Sebring International Raceway.
For Cheng, the opportunity to drive at such a storied venue as Road Atlanta is a welcome one.
“Being part of the Petit Le Mans event-week is really special, and that’s one of the many unique elements to the Lamborghini Super Trofeo series,” stated Jeffrey Cheng. ”Road Atlanta is definitely a daunting track. It has several fast corners and some big elevation changes, so you’re very busy the whole time. Everyone at GMG has done a great job of preparing the car, and we’re hoping that with a little luck we can replicate our success at VIR. I’m really appreciative of the opportunity to be here, and excited to get out and race!”
With Cheng co-driving alongside James Sofronas, the duo have already taken to the track during preliminary test sessions yesterday, with official practice beginning today. Race One will take place tomorrow, October 1, at 2:15PM ET, with Race Two taking place one day later at 5:25 PM ET. The team will provide continuous updates over their Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram feeds.
