GMG, Lamborghini Newport Beach Return to Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo North America

Following a one-year absence from the highly touted Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo North America, Global Motorsports Group (GMG) is proud to announce their return to the series, having forged a partnership with a close neighbor, Lamborghini Newport Beach. Already a full-time competitor in the Pirelli World Challenge and numerous club programs, this announcement kicks off an expanded program that looks to see several cars in action during the 2016 season. The team will return to action during the upcoming fourth, fifth and sixth rounds at Virginia International Raceway (VIR) from August 21-23, simultaneous with their efforts in the Pirelli World Challenge, which is occurring concurrently. The team will also have additional Lamborghini entries during the series final rounds at Circuit of the Americas and Road Atlanta, as well as the World Finals held at Sebring International Raceway.

While GMG has had tremendous success in the Lamborghini category, including a World Title, Sportsman Title, and event the first win in the history of the series, this weekend’s round will serve as the debut for many of their partners. Beyond serving as the motorsport debut for Lamborghini Newport Beach, the team will also service the professional debut of newcomer Jeffrey Cheng.

“I couldn’t be happier to expand our program back to the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Series,” stated GMG team owner James Sofronas. “We’ve always enjoyed a lot of success their, including taking the first-ever victory when the series debuted, and following it up with a World Title. Having known everyone at Lamborghini Newport Beach for some time, we thought this was the right time and opportunity to expand back to the series, and with several programs in place for the year, it’s a great addition to our development program. We’re really excited to bring our good friend Jeffrey Cheng out to Virginia. Jeffrey has been getting an increasing taste of racing over the last several months, and he’s definitely ready. The same is true for our good friend Rob Phillips, who will be making the jump in Austin. It’s a great testament to our team’s driver development program, and a great proving ground for many of the on-track developments we’re applying to our street cars. ”

Making his professional racing debut, Jeffrey Cheng will take to the No. 88 Lamborghini Huracán LP 620-2, his first time at the famed VIR circuit. A relative newcomer to the sport, Cheng is the most recent member of GMG’s driver development program, cultivating a diversity of talents and using a combination of professional coaching, testing, simulator sessions and data acquisition to elevate him through the ranks. For Jeffrey, who has been very impressive in testing despite limited experience, the opportunity to take part in an IMSA sanctioned weekend is a welcome one.

“It’s very exciting to take part in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America,” stated Cheng. “Obviously it’s my first race at this level so of course I have very realistic expectations, more than anything I just want to have a clean race that I can walk away proud of. The team at GMG has done a great job taking care of the whole program, the car looks amazing, and I’m really excited for the whole event.”

As part of a larger partnership between GMG and Lamborghini Newport Beach, the program was kicked off during a large gathering to reveal the car, driver, and ambitions for 2016. Serving as the number one Lamborghini dealer in all of Southern California’s Orange County, the opportunity to elevate their program through a number of initiatives both on and off the track with GMG has set them apart from any other.

Additionally, this program will run in concert with Vorsteiner, a partner of GMG, most known for their development of aerodynamic components, wheels, and other performance accessories. A development partner of GMG, the Lamborghini program will kick off the beginning of a number of products created between the two companies.

The program will officially kick off on Thursday, August 20, as part of a triple-header race weekend in concert with the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship. Running three races in advance of the TUDOR round, the one-make series promises to be an exciting one.

Live streaming coverage will be available via SQUADRACORSE.LAMBORGHINI.COM/EN/LIVE-USA, as well as television coverage on CBS Sports Network on a date to be determined.
