GMG Heads to Monterey for Lamborghini Third and Fourth Rounds
Following a mixed season-opening event in Sebring in which Global Motorsports Group (GMG) saw both triumph and disappointment, the team will head to this weekend’s third and fourth rounds of the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo North America in search of overall victories at the famed Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
“After Sebring we’re coming to Laguna Seca hungry for results,” stated GMG team owner James Sofronas. “We’re really hoping that things come together better for Andrew this weekend. He’s on an all-time high after wining his first Pirelli World Challenge race on Sunday, and there’s no reason that can’t continue into this event. He was the man in charge at Sebring, and with a little change in circumstance he would have completely conquered the last event. Tom should also do well here, it’s the closest event he has to home and the track should suit him well. Ryan will be new to the series, however, his experience in the Ferrari Challenge will help him and we’re excited to welcome him to our team.”
During the opening doubleheader at Sebring International Raceway in March, GMG had come into the weekend poised for overall victory. With 19-year-old Andrew Palmer, the reigning Lamborghini Super Trofeo World Champion topping each practice session, the Chicago native was forced to start the first race from the back due to a tech procedure error. As he moved up from the back, early contact would cut a tire down forcing him to the back of the field and fighting to make his way back up. During the second race, a dominant performance would fail to see the checkered flag when a late-race penalty was imposed on the team for an improper procedure during his pit stop.
Heading into this weekend, Palmer is poised for redemption in the No. 14 O’Gara Motorsports / The Thermal Club Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4. Having just taken a last lap victory during Sunday’s Pirelli World Challenge race in Alabama, the Pomona College student is riding a wave of momentum to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
“There’s no doubt I want to win this after Sebring,” stated Palmer. “We had a great car and everything was very comfortable, we were just hit by a few hiccups as everyone was getting acquainted with the series’ procedures. The team has done a great job of learning from this, and we’re coming to Laguna Seca prepared. Needless to say it’s been a great few days and we’re looking to continue that in Monterey.”
Canada’s Ryan Ockey will join the team for his first run in the No. 88 Lamborghini Vancouver machine. Driving in the series’ sportsman category, Ryan’s brother, Damon Ockey, took an impressive victory sweep during the event’s doubleheader at Sebring. Hoping to repeat his brother’s feat in Monterey, the Canadian will capitalize on his experience in the Ferrari Challenge to deliver results in California.
“The series and cars show a lot of potential,” stated Ockey. “Damon had nothing but good things to say about his experience in Sebring and hopefully I will enjoy the same at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. GMG has a great reputation of delivering well-prepared cars and together with Lamborghini Vancouver I’m sure we can show well.”
Finally, sportsman-category champion Tom O’Gara is looking for improved form after a difficult start in Sebring. After a number of incidents forced the Los Angeles resident down the order in both races, O’Gara will be making the short journey to nearby Monterey in search of kick-starting his 2014 season with the No. 69 O’Gara Motorsports Lamborghini.
“With Sebring behind us, the team is ready and regrouped for Monterey,” stated O’Gara. “Everyone on this team knows what it takes to win and have proven they know how to do it so hopefully this weekend can prove fruitful. I’m excited to race in California, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is such a storied venue.”
Practice for this weekend’s race will begin on Friday, May 2 with two separate races occurring on Saturday and Sunday. The team will provide continuous updates throughout the weekend.
