Consecutive Podiums Highlight GMG Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo in Canada
Visiting the famed Canadian Tire Motorspots Park, the lone Canadian round on the calendar for the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo Series, Global Motorsports Group (GMG) highlighted their weekend with a pair of podium finishes for driver David Welch and Lamborghini Vancouver.
“It was great to see David finally get a well-earned series of podiums,” stated GMG team owner James Sofronas. “I was especially happy for our friends at Lamborghini Vancouver, as we wanted to deliver a good performance during the lone weekend in their home country. This is not an easy track and everyone on the team did their job, it was very well deserved.”
Driving the No. 88 Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4, David Welch came into the weekend looking for redemption after a frustrating event at Watkins Glen International. Qualifying second in the sportsman category, the Washington native was off to a great start in Race One, setting competitive times and holding pace with the lead group for much of the event. Unfortunately, while making his series-required pit stop 20 minutes into the race, a miscalculation on minimum pit time would result in a penalty being issued sending the car back in for a stop-and-go penalty. Falling down the order in the process, Welch did a remarkable job to climb his way back and take a podium finish.
For Race Two, an early morning rain shower would present a more challenging event for the field at hand, but the experienced Welch was more than up to the task. Driving with a solid combination of aggression and patience, David never put a foot wrong en route to a second place finish for the No. 88.
“Two podiums is a result we can be happy with, especially here,” stated Welch. “It was frustrating to get the penalty in Race One as I thought we might be able to win, but regardless, we had a great car for the whole weekend and I’m pleased with how I drove. Thanks to everyone at Lamborghini Vancouver for the opportunity, this was a great weekend.”
For the No. 33 machine of Lamborghini Beverly Hills / O’Gara Motorsports, drivers Tom O’Gara and Dean DiGiacomo did a remarkable job of learning the challenging circuit at which O’Gara had never driven before. As a 2.46-mile, high-speed layout featuring a number of elevation changes, the task of navigating the nuances of the facility is a challenge for any new driver, but O’Gara and his co-driver still managed to take consecutive top-10 finishes.
In Race One, the team would do an excellent job of getting the car repaired after a practice incident, with the No. 33 machine running a fairly uneventful race en route to a ninth place finish overall. In Race Two, being tasked with the extraordinary job of driving the circuit in the rain, the duo held station to finish in tenth.
“Having to race this circuit is enough of a challenge, but having to race this in the wet is simply incredible,” stated Tom O’Gara. “This is a track where you’re on the edge of your seat the whole time and I’m happy that we were able to walk away with solid finishes in both races. The team was excellent all weekend doing a great job of getting the car in shape after our practice incident, and keeping us calm especially in wet conditions. I’m always sad to leave a race track, but on the other hand very happy to leave unscathed from this one!”
With one month off to get their machines prepared, the series will next return to Virginia International Raceway (VIR) to race at the scenic circuit nestled in Southern Virginia on August 23-24.
