Udell, Sofronas Return to Action at Mid-Ohio

Following a several week break since the most recent round of the Pirelli World Challenge championship, Global Motorsports Group (GMG) drivers Alec Udell and James Sofronas will head to this weekend’s 14th and 15th rounds at the historic Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course with the lone goal of returning to the podium.

“Everyone on this team has worked very hard to get us back on the podium,” stated Sofronas. “This year, our business has really been focused on our customers on all fronts, whether it’s driver development, street tuning, and a number of new aftermarket items. With only a few races left in the Pirelli World Challenge Championship, however, we’re coming to these last few races to remind ourselves just how fun this sport is, and how competitive we are. The fan turnout at Mid-Ohio is always pretty impressive, and it’s a fun layout to drive. It’s great to have Alec back with us this weekend as well, we really want to keep his podium streak alive and hopefully more!”

Located in Lexington, Ohio, right next to the city of Mansfield, Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course is one of the most classic events on the schedule. With decades of history behind it, the 2.4-mile, 15-turn circuit always provides exciting racing, and with a history of good results for GMG. Most recently, in 2013, the event played a major role in James Sofronas’ pursuit of the GT title, with championship rival Johnny O’Connell suffering mechanical gremlins to give James a decisive break in the title.

Heading in to this weekend’s round, Sofronas and the No. 14 Mobil 1 / The Thermal Club / Spyder Audi R8 LMS ultra is in a good position to repeat that occasion. During what has been a busy season for the Californian off track, with GMG launching several new aftermarket tuning products as well as participating in a number of motorsport events, the timing is right for James to return to action in the ultimate showcase for his products.

Also returning to the fold will be the team’s 2015 headlining development driver, 19-year old Alec Udell. Despite missing several races in the series’ GT-Cup category, the Woodlands, Texas native has been on an impressive streak. In every race he’s finished, he’s managed to finish on the podium in his No. 17 Porsche 911 GT Cup, a feat everyone is hoping will continue in to Ohio.

“We definitely want to continue our streak in to Mid-Ohio,” stated Udell. “James and everyone at the team have done an excellent job keeping us running all year, and I think this weekend’s race should be a good opportunity to really show strong form.”

Running in conjunction with the Verizon IndyCar Series, practice begins today, with the series’ double-header format occurring during the weekend. Race One will occur on Saturday at 4:45PM, and Race Two on Sunday at 12PM.
